On 10 July 2025, GREENHOOD was presented to local farmers in Staden, Belgium, during an event hosted by the Province of West Flanders, Inagro, and Ghent University (UGent), focusing on upcoming wetland restoration and water collection efforts in the Luikbeek area.

About the event

The session brought together farmers and local stakeholders to discuss planned interventions along the Luikbeek river, part of the wider Flemish BlueDeal initiative to tackle water scarcity through nature-based solutions. The event provided updates on the construction timeline for a new wetland and an agricultural water collection point, which are expected to be completed by the end of 2025. The initiative contributes to improving regional water resilience and sustainable agricultural practices.

GREENHOOD's contribution

During the event, Prof. Erik Meers (UGent) introduced the GREENHOOD project and its role in supporting the ecological monitoring of the Luikbeek pilot site. This site is one of the demonstration areas within the Rhine, Meuse & Scheldt River Basin demo region, where GREENHOOD is testing its solutions to rebalance nutrient flows and restore water quality. UGent’s contribution includes monitoring the biodiversity and environmental performance of the new wetland and ensuring that scientific data informs local implementation and policy.
