The Trondheim Fjord Basin demo-region, coordinated by NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology), officially launched its GREENHOOD demonstration activities with a kick-off meeting on 10 April 2025. Partners from academia, industry, and agriculture came together to develop circular nutrient management solutions for Trøndelag County, a region facing significant nutrient surpluses from aquaculture and livestock production.

About Trondheim Fjord Basin demo-region

The Trondheim Fjord Basin represents Trøndelag County, where intensive aquaculture and farming have led to nutrient accumulation, threatening water quality in the fjord. Key challenges include:

  • High phosphorus surplus from fish farming and livestock.
  • Limited use of recycled nutrients, with continued reliance on mineral fertilisers.
  • Uncollected fish sludge and limited land for digestate application.

GREENHOOD’s vision & solutions

During the demo-region kick-off meeting, partners discussed GREENHOOD’s strategic approach to tackling nutrient pollution in the Trondheim Fjord Basin. The project seeks to minimise environmental impact by recovering nutrients from aquaculture and agricultural waste, transforming them into high-quality bio-based fertilisers (BBFs). These sustainable alternatives will help reduce reliance on mineral fertilisers while enabling the redistribution of nutrients to regions in need.

Key solutions explored included innovative waste-to-resource technologies, such as anaerobic digestion combined with struvite recovery and plasma treatment, as well as the production of nutrient-dense granulated fertilisers from manure, fish sludge, and slaughter waste. Partners also examined advanced gasification methods to extract hydrogen and nutrient-rich ash, alongside field trials and digital monitoring tools to optimise regional nutrient cycling.

Collaborative strength

The demo-region unites cross-sector expertise under NTNU’s leadership, with core partners including waister, NCE Aquatech Cluster, Norsøk, and Proman, alongside contributors such as xylem, FI - Future Innovations, WoodWorks! Cluster, TU Wien, Svanem Biogass, Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), and NRL (Norsk Landbruksrådgiving).

This kick-off marked the beginning of concerted efforts to advance circular nutrient management, reduce environmental harm, and boost regional sustainability in the years to come.
